Sadio Mane issues backing for under-fire Liverpool signing
The Senegal international leaps to the defence of Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius
Sadio Mane has issued a message of support for Loris Karius following recent criticism of the Liverpool goalkeeper.
The Germany Under-21 international endured a forgettable 90 minutes at Bournemouth earlier this month after his handling error allowed Nathan Ake to score an added-time winner and seal a 4-3 victory over the Reds at the Vitality Stadium.
Karius would have been hoping for an assured performance in his next Premier League outing on Sunday afternoon but the Liverpool goalkeeper was criticised for failing to save Dimitri Payet’s free-kick in a 2-2 draw with West Ham at Anfield.
The 23-year-old was signed in a £4.7m deal from Bundesliga outfit Mainz in the summer transfer window as Klopp looked to strengthen his goalkeeping options.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Middlesbrough, Mane backed Karius to bounce back from his recent setbacks.
“Everybody knows this is football and [criticism] can happen,” Mane said.
“We always train together and know his quality, what he can do to help the team.
“I think he will keep doing his best for the team, and do his best for the next game and keep helping, so what is behind is behind.
“I think in football everybody gets this kind of criticism. The reaction is more important now.”
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last season after Klopp took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers back in October 2015.
