Mark Lawrenson states prediction for Southampton v Tottenham
The former Liverpool defender is backing Tottenham to beat Southampton on Wednesday
Mark Lawrenson is confident that Tottenham Hotspur will secure a vital win at Southampton on Wednesday night.
The north London side aren’t in action until 28 December as Mauricio Pochettino’s players get to put their feet up and watch their top-four rivals to battle it out on Boxing Day.
Tottenham have been in impressive form in recent weeks following a run of two successive Premier League victories over Swansea City and Burnley.
Spurs were 3-0 winners against the Welsh outfit last week thanks to Christian Eriksen’s brace before a 2-1 win against Sean Dyche’s promoted side.
The Lilywhites are in fifth place in the Premier League table and 10 points adrift of current leaders Chelsea after 17 games.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson backed Tottenham to beat Southampton next Wednesday despite the Saints’ good record at St Mary’s this term.
“The good thing from Southampton’s point of view is that it does not look like they will miss injured striker Charlie Austin – they have a few other options up front,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“Jay Rodriguez and Sofiane Boufal have done well recently and I think Shane Long gives a lot for the team too – he is not a regular goalscorer but he would chase a paper bag down the street all day for you, even in a hurricane.
Saints will be a test for Tottenham on Mauricio Pochettino’s return to his old club, but his Spurs side have won their past two games and I just get the impression that they might just go on a bit of a run again now.”
Tottenham finished in third place in the Premier League table last season after challenging Leicester City for most of the 2015-16 campaign.
Spurs signed five players in the summer transfer window.
