Steven Gerrard delivers his honest verdict on Arsenal this season
Steven Gerrard has his say on Arsenal's chances of winning major trophies under Arsene Wenger this season
Steven Gerrard believes that Arsenal have improved in key areas this season and is backing the Gunners to challenge for silverware this term.
The Gunners have come in for criticism for failing to challenge for major honours in recent years under Arsene Wenger following the club’s switch from Highbury to The Emirates.
Indeed, Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 season.
Arsenal finished second last season and Wenger bolstered his squad by signing the likes of Granit Xhaka and Shkodran Mustafi in the summer transfer window.
And former Liverpool captain Gerrard believes that Arsenal have a stronger squad this season as they look to end their long wait for the Premier League.
Speaking on BT Sport on Tuesday night, Gerrard said: “I think [Arsenal have struggled because of a lack of] mental toughness and there have also been areas of the Arsenal team that were not good enough.
“I do [think they’re stronger now]. Arsene Wenger’s bought well. Looking at their strongest 11 now on paper, they look tougher through the spine.
“They’ve bought a couple of big defenders and I think Petr Cech being there is huge.”
Arsenal are now gearing up for their Premier League clash against Stoke City at The Emirates as they look to close the gap on Chelsea, who lead the top flight by three points.
