Steven Gerrard delivers verdict on Alexis Sanchez’s Arsenal contract situation
Steven Gerrard has his say about the futures of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil at Arsenal
Steven Gerrard has urged Arsenal to give the club’s fans what they want and tie Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil down to new contracts at The Emirates.
The pair’s futures at the club have been a source of speculation in recent weeks after they both entered into the final 18 months of their deals at the north London club.
Arsenal are believed to be in negotiations with the star duo about extending their deals beyond the summer of 2018, but both players are likely to want significant pay rises at The Emirates.
However, former Liverpool captain Gerrard feels that Arsenal should simply pay what is required and tie both Sanchez and Ozil down to new deals as quickly as possible.
Gerrard also dismissed suggestions that breaking the club’s wage structure could affect the harmony in the dressing room.
Speaking on BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show, Gerrard said: “You’ve got to think about the club’s long-term future.
“Give the Arsenal fans what they want – they want new contracts for the two star players.
“They’ve both been in scintillating form. If Arsenal want success in the near future, they need to keep those two.
“I don’t think it would affect the rest of the Arsenal dressing room or team spirit if they found out that Alexis Sanchez earned a little bit more than everyone else in the dressing room.
“When I was in the Liverpool dressing room, if it came out that Luis Suarez earned £300,000 a week, I’d be the happiest man at Christmas.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League last season and without a trophy.
