Steven Gerrard: This is what Arsene Wenger has added to Arsenal squad
The former Liverpool captain explains what is different about the Arsenal squad in the 2016-17 campaign
Steven Gerrard believes Arsene Wenger has managed to add more leaders to Arsenal squad over the summer.
The Gunners finished in second place in the Premier League table last season but 10 points adrift of champions Leicester City.
Wenger’s side were criticised for their performance in the 2015-16 campaign given that their perennial rivals all struggled in the top flight.
The Arsenal manager signed Granit Xhaka, Shkodran Mustafi, Lucas Perez, Rob Holding and Takuma Asano in the summer transfer window.
Mustafi has quickly established himself as a first-team regular in Wenger’s starting line-up, while Xhaka has been in and out of the manager’s XI.
However, former Liverpool captain Gerrard is already seeing a difference in terms of leadership this season.
“I think they’ve got more leaders now. He [Wenger] bought leaders in the summer and I think that will make them a lot stronger going forward,” Gerrard told BT Sport.
Arsenal were 4-1 winners in their final Champions League group-stage game to secure top spot in Group A on Tuesday night.
The Gunners will host Stoke City in their next Premier League game at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
