Steven Gerrard: Why this Man United player has impressed me

Steven Gerrard praises Wayne Rooney after his performance in Manchester United's 2-0 win at West Brom

Steven Gerrard heaped praise on Wayne Rooney for his performance in Manchester United’s 2-0 win at West Brom on Saturday night.

The Manchester United and England captain has had his fair share of criticism this season following his stuttering form for both club and country.

However, the striker looked to be in good shape as he helped Jose Mourinho’s men notch up a 2-0 win at The Hawthorns thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s two-goal haul.

Rooney looks to be finding his feet under new manager Mourinho at Old Trafford, and former Liverpool captain Gerrard singled the forward out for special praise after the game.

Speaking on BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show, Gerrard said: “You can see that record [Sir Bobby Charlton’s United goal record] being broken very soon because he’s getting closer and closer.

“I was impressed with Wayne’s work-rate today.

“It was a solid performance from him at both ends of the pitch.”

Manchester United’s win at West Brom was their third in a row in the Premier League and was a welcome victory following the club’s recent stuttering form under Mourinho.
