Tottenham legend: This Chelsea defender impressed with ‘captain’s performance’
Garth Crooks was impressed with Gary Cahill's performance in Chelsea's 1-0 win against West Brom
Gary Cahill produced a captain’s performance during Chelsea’s 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon, according to Garth Crooks.
The England international captained Antonio Conte’s side as the Chelsea back three continue to keep club skipper John Terry on the substitutes’ bench.
Cahill produced an assured performance alongside Cesar Azpilicueta and David Luiz against a potentially dangerous West Brom outfit at Stamford Bridge.
Spain international Diego Costa scored a second-half winner with 12 minutes remaining in west London to seal three points.
Former Tottenham forward Crooks was impressed with the performance of Cahill in Conte’s all-conquering Chelsea side.
“Nine wins on the trot for the Blues suggest a Premier League title could be calling for Gary Cahill and his team-mates once more,” Crooks told BBC Sport.
“The Chelsea captain was superb against a disciplined and well-organised West Brom side – a point Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola might want to consider.
“It was obvious that David Luiz was still suffering from the effects of last week’s appalling challenge from Sergio Aguero. The Brazilian was determined to play but needed some care and attention at the back, and he got it from his skipper.
“Cahill covered everything and took charge of a situation that normally Luiz would have handled. Another clean sheet for Chelsea and a captain’s performance by Cahill.”
Chelsea recorded their ninth successive Premier League game on Sunday thanks to Costa’s second-half winner against the Baggies.
The Blues moved six points clear of third-placed Liverpool in the Premier League title race after the Reds could only draw 2-2 with West Ham United at Anfield.
Conte’s side will make the trip to Premier League strugglers Sunderland in their next top-flight fixture on Wednesday night.
