Alan Shearer delivers blunt verdict on Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa
The former Newcastle striker wasn't overly impressed with Tottenham's 2-0 win against Aston Villa
Alan Shearer felt that Tottenham Hotspur deserved to reach the FA Cup fourth round despite bemoaning a disappointing spectacle as Spurs eased to a 2-0 win against Aston Villa at White Hart Lane.
The north London side were facing Steve Bruce’s side just days after their impressive 2-0 win against Premier League leaders Chelsea to boost their chances of winning the title this season.
However, Spurs couldn’t make the breakthrough in the first half as their summer signing Vincent Janssen continued his poor form in front of goal after a £19m switch from AZ Alkmaar in the summer.
Mauricio Pochettino brought on Dele Alli in an attempt to unlock the Villa defence but it was Ben Davies who made the breakthrough with his first goal for Tottenham with 19 minutes remaining.
South Korea international Son Heung-min doubled their advantage to secure their passage to the next round but former Newcastle United striker Shearer wasn’t overly impressed.
“You’ve got to praise manager Mauricio Pochettino,” Shearer told BBC Sport.
“He realised he had to change things. Dele Alli coming on gave them more pace. They then had more energy to their game. The best team won on the afternoon but it wasn’t a great game.”
Tottenham are in third place in the Premier League table.
