Alan Shearer: What really impressed me about Chelsea

The former Newcastle striker was impressed with Chelsea's ability to shut up shop after their 4-2 win against Stoke City

Alan Shearer has praised Chelsea’s ability to overcome a number of setbacks against Stoke City after their thrilling 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge on New Year’s Eve.

The Premier League leaders were looking to record their 13th successive top-flight victory on Saturday and were facing a Stoke side that lost 4-1 to Liverpool on Tuesday night.

However, the Potters showed plenty of fight as Mark Hughes’s men twice pegged back the west London side after Chelsea had taken the lead through Gary Cahill and then Willian.

The Brazilian midfielder got on the score sheet again inside 60 seconds of Peter Crouch’s equaliser before Diego Costa netted late on to seal three points for the Blues.

Discussing Chelsea’s performance on Match of the Day on New Year’s Eve, Shearer explained what really impressed him about Antonio Conte’s side.

“The impressive thing about them today is normally when they get one goal, they shut up shop. They were asked different questions and they came up with the right answers,” Shearer said.

Chelsea haven’t lost a Premier League game since a 3-0 defeat by title rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in August.
