Antonio Conte: I’m really happy for this Chelsea star, he deserves his goals
The Chelsea manager is happy for Willian after the midfielder's brace in their 4-2 win against Stoke City on New Year's Eve
Antonio Conte admitted he was thrilled for Willian after the Chelsea midfielder scored twice in their 4-2 win against Stoke City at Stamford Bridge on New Year’s Eve.
The west London side recorded a 13th successive Premier League win on Saturday afternoon thanks to a thrilling victory over the Potters despite the best efforts of the visitors to end Chelsea’s winning run.
Gary Cahill’s first-half opener was cancelled out by Indis Martin before Peter Crouch’s close-range finish restored parity after Willian’s first goal of the afternoon at Stamford Bridge.
However, the west London side were in the lead less than 60 seconds after Chelsea’s equaliser thanks to Willian’s superb goal before Diego Costa polished off the Premier League win.
Willian has scored five times and has made one assist in 16 Premier League appearances under new Chelsea manager Conte this term.
Speaking at his post-match media conference after Chelsea’s 4-2 win against Stoke, Conte lavished praise on Willian ahead of their clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday afternoon.
“I’m pleased for him, it’s fantastic. We all know the period Wilian passed through but today he played a really good game with and without the ball,” Conte said.
“He scored two goals and I’m happy because he’s a really good guy, he deserves this. We tried to stay close to him but when this type of situation happens it’s not easy for any person.
“After a bad period which he’s overcome I’m pleased for him. He’s a fantastic player but more importantly for me he’s a fantastic man. He worked a lot in the game and he was very tired. I prefer to avoid him playing the last 10 minutes because when you are tired you risk injury.”
