Antonio Conte moves to play down Chelsea expectations

Antonio Conte talks up the competitive nature of the Premier League this season

Antonio Conte has told Chelsea fans not to expect too much from his team this season due to the competitive nature of the Premier League.

The Blues have been in superb form this term and have firmly established themselves as the favourites to win the Premier League title after their impressive winning run.

Chelsea do not have the distraction of European football this season and have been purely focused on domestic affairs as they bid to try and regain the Premier League title.

The west London club’s fine form has been in stark contrast to their struggles last season, when they ended up 10th in the table, without a trophy and with their title defence in tatters.

Conte has drawn comparisons between his current Chelsea side and his final season in charge of Juventus.

However, the Blues boss has moved to play down expectations due to the highly competitive nature of the English top flight.

Speaking to Chelsea’s website before Wednesday’s clash with Spurs, Conte said: “In the last season we finished with 102 points, a record in Italy.

“It was a fantastic championship. At that moment in the Italian league there was only Roma to try to fight for the title.

“Here there is a different situation because there are six very strong teams that last season were placed above us, and also spent a lot of money.

“For this reason, I think it’s more difficult here now to keep this position [at the top of the table].”
