Antonio Conte opens up about whether Chelsea transfer could happen
The Chelsea manager says Asmir Begovic is free to leave if the Blues can find a replacement goalkeeper
Antonio Conte has provided an update on the future of Chelsea’s second-choice goalkeeper Asmir Begovic before the close of the January transfer window.
The Blues shot stopper has been linked with a move away from the west London side this month after failing to usurp Belgian goalkeeper Thiabut Courtois as the Premier League leaders’s first-choice shot stopper.
Begovic has been linked with a move to Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side in recent weeks and the Bosnia Herzegovina international started his Premier League career at Portsmouth.
The 29-year-old managed to keep a clean sheet in Chelsea’s 4-0 win against Peterborough in the FA Cup fourth round at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Willian, Pedro Rodriguez, Branislav Ivanovic and Michy Batshuayi.
Speaking at his post-match media conference after Chelsea’s 4-0 win against the Championship side on Saturday evening, Conte provided an update on Begovic’s future at Stamford Bridge.
“It’s the same situation as for Iva. There are three days to finish this transfer window. The situation is very clear with Asmir,” Conte said.
“Asmir is a really important player for me, a really good goalkeeper, important in the changing room. We are open to offer him the possibility to go in another team, but it’s important we have a substitution. We have some situations we are seeing, but we are not closer.
“He loves Chelsea, his teammates, the club. We have a really good relationship and for sure it won’t be a problem.”
Chelsea are in first place in the Premier League table and eight points clear of second-placed Arsenal ahead of Tuesday night’s trip to Liverpool.
