Antonio Conte’s honest response when asked about Chelsea striker’s goal celebration
The Chelsea manager struggles to explain Diego Costa's goal celebration...
Antonio Conte was at a loss to explain Diego Costa’s cryptic goal celebration on Sunday afternoon after the striker scored in Chelsea’s 2-0 win against Hull City at Stamford Bridge.
The former Atletico Madrid striker returned to the Chelsea side following his absence last weekend due to a back injury as the Premier League leaders eased to a 3-0 win against defending champions Leicester City in his absence.
Costa was reported to have fallen out with manager Conte over reported interest from China, with speculation suggesting that the Spanish striker was in line to earn a staggering £400,000 a week.
The 28-year-old centre-forward returned to first-team training last week and Conte opted to name Costa in his starting line-up for the visit of Hull.
And the striker repaid his manager’s faith with a first-half opener, Costa appeared to mimic all the talk surrounding his future as he celebrated his 15th Premier League goal of the 2016-17 season.
Speaking at his post-match media conference on Sunday evening, Conte was asked to shed light on Costa’s goal celebration.
“Honestly, I didn’t see it because I was celebrating on the bench. Sometimes when we score its very dangerous for my staff. It’s important to score a goal and celebrate in any way, Diego played a good game and I hope with his performance he finished the speculation about him,” Conte said.
“We showed we are a team with great unity. That’s the real value because we stayed at the top of the table.”
