Paul Merson makes prediction Arsenal won’t want ahead of Southampton clash
The former Arsenal midfielder believes Southampton will make life awkward for Arsene Wenger and his players
Paul Merson believes Southampton will force a replay when the EFL Cup finalists host Arsenal in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday evening.
The Saints were 2-0 winners against the north London side in the EFL Cup quarter-final at The Emirates in November to deny Arsene Wenger to secure some much-needed silverware.
Southampton should be high in confidence after the Saints eased to a 2-0 aggregate win against Liverpool in the last four thanks to Shane Long’s winner in a 1-0 victory in the second leg of the last-four clash at Anfield on Wednesday night.
Arsenal, meanwhile, moved to within eight points of Premier League leaders Chelsea thanks to a late 2-1 win against promoted side Burnley at the Emirates Stadium last weekend.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Southampton have the quality to deny the visitors a win and force an inconvenient fourth-round replay at The Emirates.
“Southampton will be confident after their phenomenal result in the EFL Cup semi-final. They’re already at Wembley and I see them causing Arsenal problems. With that in mind, I see this one going to a replay, a replay Arsenal will not want,” Merson told Sky Sports.
Arsenal are in second place in the Premier League table and eight points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
