Arsene Wenger delivers latest update on the futures of Arsenal duo

Arsene Wenger hints that Arsenal will offer new contracts to veteran duo Santi Cazorla and Per Mertesacker

Arsene Wenger has hinted that Arsenal will offer new contracts to both Santi Cazorla and Per Mertesacker.

Both players are currently sidelined due to injury but Wenger has revealed that the north London club are planning to offer them new deals before their contracts run out in the summer.

Cazorla is currently sidelined with a heel injury, while Mertesacker is still on the way to recovery from a serious knee injury.

Wenger has suggested that Arsenal are still planning to hand both players contract extensions despite their recent fitness struggles.

Asked if the duo’s fitness problems would have a bearing on whether Arsenal offer them new contracts, Wenger told a news conference at Arsenal’s training ground on Friday morning: “No.

“We have an option on both of them and I think we will take it.”

Wenger then explained why he was keen to keep the veteran duo at the club, adding: “For their qualities as football players firstly but as well for their mental guidance.

“We need to have a balance between youth and experience. They are important in that.”
