Arsene Wenger gives latest Arsenal injury update ahead of Southampton clash
The Arsenal manager delivers an update on the fitness of Mathieu Debuchy, Per Mertesacker and Theo Walcott
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Mathieu Debuchy, Per Mertesacker and Theo Walcott are all back in first-team training ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round.
The Gunners were 2-1 winners against Championship side Preston North End in the third round at Deep Dale thanks to Olivier Giroud’s late winner for the Premier League side.
Mertesacker has been sidelined for the 2016-17 season so far after the former Germany defender picked up a knee injury in pre-season training.
His fellow Arsenal defender Debuchy was forced off in the first half of a 3-1 win against Bournemouth in December after a hamstring strain.
Walcott, meanwhile, hasn’t line up for the Gunners since scoring his 101st goal of his professional career in a 2-1 loss at Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium before Christmas.
Speaking at his pre-match media conference ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday evening, Wenger delivered an update on the trio ahead of the clash at St Mary’s.
“We have Theo Walcott back in the squad and of course we lose Granit Xhaka because he will be suspended. Mohamed Elneny is at the Africa Cup of Nations and that’s it,” Wenger said.
“The good news is that Per Mertesacker and Mathieu Debuchy are back in full training from Friday, so the squad is quite big, but we are a bit short in midfield at the moment.”
