Arsene Wenger: I’ve spoken to Arsenal midfielder about discipline

The Arsenal manager has some advice for his summer signing about his disciplinary record

Arsene Wenger has urged Granit Xhaka to learn from his latest sending off after the Arsenal midfielder was dismissed during their Premier League win last weekend.

The Switzerland international was sent off for a two-footed tackle on Steven Defour in the second half of Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over promoted side Burnley at the Emirates Stadium.

Xhaka’s red card was the second of his Arsenal career so far after the summer signing was dismissed for a professional foul during their 3-2 win against Swansea City in north London in October.

The Arsenal midfielder will miss their FA Cup fourth-round clash against EFL Cup finalists Southampton at St Mary’s this weekend as he begins his three-game suspension.

Speaking at his pre-match media conference at London Colney on Thursday morning, Wenger offered some advice to Xhaka about his disciplinary record.

“We talked about it, felt watching it again the sending off was harsh it was not a dangerous tackle,” Wenger said.

“It was a clumsy tackle, he has to learn from that but I dont think he wanted to injure anyone. He has to learn from it. We lose him for four games in a very important part of the season.”

Xhaka moved to Arsenal in a £33m deal from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer transfer window in 2016 as one of five new additions at The Emirates.
