Arsene Wenger makes admission about Alexis Sanchez at Arsenal
Arsene Wenger reveals that he always planned to give Alexis Sanchez a rest for Arsenal in January
Arsene Wenger has insisted that he always planned to give Alexis Sanchez a rest in January after a gruelling start to the season for the Arsenal forward.
Sanchez has been a regular fixture in the Arsenal first team this season and has made 20 appearances for the Gunners in the Premier League, scoring 13 goals and notching up seven assists.
There have been concerns about Sanchez’s fitness levels due to his constant inclusion in the starting line-up for Arsenal this season.
And Arsenal boss Wenger has revealed that he was always planning to give the Chile international some time off in the new year.
Speaking to Arsenal’s website before the Gunners’ FA Cup trip to Preston, Wenger said: “Alexis wants always to play and on one side when I don’t play him, people say ‘why don’t you play him?’ and on the other hand I am criticised for using him too much.
“But I always planned in my head, no matter what happens, that in January he will need a breather.
“What we forget is that when they go away for international games they travel to Chile. Then they play sometimes 2,000 miles away, they travel back and then they come here and play the next day again.
“They are human beings – you have to give them a breather at some stage. Mentally and physically [Alexis needs a rest] because at the moment he is a bit jaded. You can see that he is tired.”
Arsenal will now turn their attentions back to Premier League affairs and their trip to Swansea City on 14 January.
The Gunners are currently eight points behind leaders Chelsea in the Premier League table after 20 games.
