Arsene Wenger names three midfielders who can replace Arsenal star

The Arsenal manager is confident that Jeff Reine-Adelaide, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Alex Iwobi can

Arsene Wenger has named Jeff Reine-Adelaide, Ainsley Maitland-Nile and Alex Iwobi as players capable of covering Granit Xhaka in Arsenal’s midfield.

The Switzerland international is facing a four-game suspension following his sending off in the second half of Arsenal’s 2-1 win against Burnley at the Emirates Stadium last weekend.

Xhaka’s red card was his second dismissal of his short Arsenal career so far, prompting criticism of the £33m summer signing’s poor disciplinary record.

Wenger signed the holding midfielder in a big-money move from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer transfer window.

However, the Arsenal boss is confident that he has capable replacements for Xhaka during the Swiss midfielder’s four-game suspension.

Speaking at his pre-match media conference on Friday afternoon ahead of Arsenal’s FA Cup fourth-round clash at Southampton, Wenger said:

“After [Coquelin and Ramsey], we have Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, and Alex Iwobi can play in there although he’s not a defensive specialist.

“Those are the options we have.”

Arsenal are in second place in the Premier League table but eight points behind current leaders Chelsea with 16 games to play this season.
