Arsene Wenger reacts to Danny Welbeck’s Arsenal comeback
Arsene Wenger reveals his delight at seeing Danny Welbeck return to action for Arsenal at the weekend
Arsene Wenger has revealed his delight at seeing Danny Welbeck return to action for Arsenal on Saturday.
The England striker had not made a single appearance for the Gunners this season after a lengthy lay-off with a serious knee injury but came on as a second-half substitute during Arsenal’s 2-1 FA Cup comeback win over Preston North End on Saturday night.
Welbeck will be hoping to earn a regular spot in the Arsenal side in the second half of the season as the Gunners look to end the campaign with a trophy.
And Wenger has admitted that he was thrilled to be able to call upon the England forward on Saturday night.
Wenger told Arsenal’s website after the game: “He has been out for such a long time, that just for him to get 15 minutes was great.
“I think I had a hesitation. Had we not come back early I would perhaps have brought him on earlier. He thought he had 20 minutes in his legs and in the end he nearly scored, so that’s good.”
Welbeck will be hoping to be involved once again when Arsenal take on Swansea City in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
The north London side are currently fifth in the table and eight points behind leaders Chelsea.
