The Arsenal manager reacts to Danny Welbeck's performance in their FA Cup win at Southampton
Arsene Wenger has hailed Danny Welbeck’s resilience after the Arsenal striker scored twice in their 5-0 win against Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday evening.
The England international broke the deadlock in the 15th minute with a superb finish before Welbeck doubled the away side’s lead just seven minutes later to leave Arsenal in command of the tie.
Theo Walcott netted a hat-trick against his former employers Southampton to ensure Arsenal were in the fifth-round draw without any problems despite Wenger being sat in the stands at St Mary’s.
Welbeck was making his first start since returning from a serious knee injury that has kept him sidelined since the end of the 2015-16 season.
Speaking to BT Sport after Welbeck’s impressive performance in the FA Cup fourth-round clash, Wenger said:
“Danny Welbeck was very sharp because he has been working very hard. He comes back from a long way out and has gone through some very difficult moments mentally,” Wenger said.
“But his resilience was absolutely marvellous and he was rewarded tonight, so we are happy.”
Arsenal are in second place in the Premier League table and eight points adrift of current leaders Chelsea.
The Gunners will host Watford in their next Premier League fixture on Tuesday night.
