Arsene Wenger sends message to Arsenal supporters about Mesut Ozil
Arsene Wenger talks up the influence that Mesut Ozil has had at Arsenal this season
Arsene Wenger has leapt to the defence of Mesut Ozil following the recent criticism of the Arsenal playmaker.
The Germany international’s display was called into question during Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Manchester City before Christmas as the Gunners dropped off in the second half at The Etihad.
Ozil, however, responded by setting up Arsenal’s winner in their 1-0 victory over West Brom at The Emirates in the Premier League on Boxing Day.
The playmaker has been a regular fixture in the Arsenal side this season and has earned a reputation as one of the Premier League’s best playmakers since his arrival at the club from Real Madrid back in 2013.
And Wenger has talked up the contribution that Ozil has made to his Arsenal side this season.
Speaking to Arsenal’s website before Sunday’s clash with Crystal Palace at The Emirates, Wenger said: “He is of course a huge player. I always defended him here in press conferences, because I believe that he has improved his commitment. Physically he works much harder than people think he does.
“He works hard, but I think he had one or two games this season especially where he was frustrated. The one that comes to my mind is the Man City game where he was criticised after, but overall if you look at the whole contribution in the whole season, for me he has been absolutely fantastic.
“I believe this season he has scored more goals and personally I believe as well he creates more chances for himself than ever before because he runs more behind.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table and without a trophy last season. Ozil won the FA Cup in 2014 and 2015 with the Gunners.
