Arsene Wenger: This Arsenal midfielder isn’t spectacular, but is very efficient
The Arsenal manager discusses what he likes about Algerian midfielder
Arsene Wenger has described Algeria midfielder Ismael Bennacer as an exciting prospect for the future after his return from the Africa Cup of Nations.
The 19-year-old was a surprise inclusion in Algeria’s squad for the major tournament after the teenager was drafted in to replace injured Saipher Taider.
The African midfielder has found his first-team opportunities limited at the north London club since making his debut in a 3-0 loss at Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup in 2015.
However, Arsenal manager Wenger hinted that he is a huge admirer of Bennacer, discussing what qualities the midfielder can bring to the Gunners side in the future.
“He’s a player who is not spectacular, but a very efficient player,” Wenger told Arsenal’s website. “He’s the kind of player who, once you put him in the team, you don’t take him out anymore.
“He can defend very well, he’s a fighter, a left-footed player and very efficient going forward. He’s a real box-to-box player.
“He can do all kinds of jobs. He is still young, still lacks a little bit of experience, but is a very promising player.”
Arsenal were 2-1 winners against Burnley at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday after Alexis Sanchez scored a controversial winner from the penalty spot in added time.
The north London side are in second place in the Premier League table but eight points behind current leaders Chelsea with 16 games to play in the title race.
