Arsene Wenger: This Arsenal striker is lacking zip in training
The Arsenal manager discusses Danny Welbeck's return from injury
Arsene Wenger has admitted that Danny Welbeck is lacking a bit of zip in training but the Arsenal manager is confident the striker can get back to his best.
The England international suffered his second serious knee injury in successive seasons last term as Welbeck’s hopes were dashed of going to Euro 2016 following a knee injury after Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City in May.
Welbeck has made three appearances this year since completing his rehabilitation from the injury problem as the former Manchester United striker looks to secure a regular starting spot under Wenger.
The 26-year-old will be facing competition from in-form Chile international Alexis Sanchez and France centre-forward Olivier Giroud to start up front for the north London side.
Speaking about Welbeck’s comeback from his serious knee injury, Wenger revealed that the Arsenal striker has shown a fearless attitude which has given his manager confidence.
“At his age and in his position he was sure to go to the European Championship. What happened to him was unbelievable and he was down for a while, but now he looks to have recovered,” Wenger told his media conference.
“In training he still lacks a fraction of zip when he starts [moving]. But overall he looks quite fit. What is the most important is that he doesn’t look scared. That’s the biggest hurdle when you come back.”
Arsenal are in second place in the Premier League table and eight points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
