Arsene Wenger: This is really important for Arsenal, it shows we have quality
The Arsenal manager discusses his players's ability to score late goals in the 2016-17 season so far
Arsene Wenger has underlined the importance of the strength and depth on the Arsenal bench this season.
The Gunners have been able to rescue three points on a number of occasions throughout the season thanks to the impact of second-half substitutes for Wenger’s men.
Olivier Giroud, in particular, has come off the bench to secure a 3-1 win at Sunderland before the France striker netted a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United.
Arsenal played out thrilling 2-1 win against promoted side Burnley at The Emirates last weekend thanks to Alexis Sanchez’s added-time penalty in the Premier League clash.
Discussing Arsenal’s ability to score late goals this season, Wenger hailed the depth of his squad as his fringe players continue to have an impact on their results.
“The trend is linked with fitness and style of play, but the Burnley result was linked with resilience and mental desire. The focus on what you want to do is not enough, so everything has to be right and it all has to click, Wenger is quoted as saying by Arsenal’s website.
“It’s true that there’s a relentless attitude in the team, of strength and belief. Maybe the fact that we know we can score great goals means we keep going. Against Burnley we found the resources to score another goal, and for us it was a massive game because we knew we had an opportunity [to go second].
“What’s very important is the players who come on off the bench. We say that a lot, that we are a whole squad, we are not just 11 players. Maybe that’s been justified more than ever this season because the players who have come on have made a huge contribution every time and we have a quality bench as well. Their attitude is right.”
Arsenal are in second place in the Premier League table and eight points behind current leaders Chelsea.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2004.
