Cesar Azpilicueta admits Chelsea switch was ‘strange’

Cesar Apzilicueta discusses Chelsea's switch to a 3-4-3 formation under Antonio Conte this season

Cesar Azpilicueta has admitted that the switch to a 3-4-3 formation at Chelsea this season was “strange” at first.

New Chelsea boss Antonio Conte opted to make the switch earlier in the season after the west London side suffered back to back defeats at the hands of Liverpool and Arsenal.

The west London club have not looked back since the switch and are currently the heavy favourites to win the Premier League title this season and are leading the way at the top of the table.

The Blues have fully adapted to the switch, but defender Azpilicueta – who has been one of Chelsea’s top performers this season – has admitted that it took some getting used to.

Speaking in an interview with Football Focus, Azpilicueta said: “At the beginning it was a bit strange.

“Most of us needed help playing in that system.

“But the manager decided to change the formation and since then we have been amazing.

“We have worked really hard and improved under that system.”

Chelsea’s upturn in form this season has been in stark contrast to their struggles last term, when they ended up 10th in the table and without a trophy.
