Chelsea legend issues blunt warning to Tottenham in the title race
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink says Tottenham must now back up their win over Chelsea with a series of positive results
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has warned Tottenham that their win over Chelsea will count for nothing unless they back it up with a series of positive results.
The north London side boosted their title hopes on Wednesday night when Dele Alli scored twice to hand Tottenham a 2-0 win over Chelsea at White Hart Lane.
It was the first time that Chelsea had been beaten in 13 Premier League outings and allowed Liverpool to cut the Blues’ lead at the top of the table down to five points.
The win also lifted Tottenham up into third place and seven points behind leaders Chelsea after 20 games of the new season.
However, Chelsea legend Hasselbaink feels that Tottenham must now embark on a run in the Premier League if they want to cement their status as title challengers.
Speaking to Sky Sports immediately after Tottenham’s win, Hasselbaink said: “They [Tottenham] had the edge. They have got a really talented squad and a really talented team with an abundance of ability. What is really important for them is that they kick on.
“The last time they had a really good performance against Man City here, I think they lost their next match or they drew. They can’t afford to look back.
“They need to kick on if they want to do something this season.”
Chelsea finished 10th in the table last season, while Tottenham ended up in third place.
