Chelsea to outbid Premier League title rival for Netherlands defender – report
Chelsea are ready to offer £60m for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk amid interest from Manchester United, say reports
Chelsea are putting together a £60m bid for Netherlands and Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, according to reports in the British media.
The Daily Express are reporting that Antonio Conte is a big admirer of the former Celtic defender as the Italian manager looks to bolster his options at the back.
Van Dijk has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best defenders over the past 24 months at Southampton under Ronald Koeman and Claude Peul.
The same article states that Manchester City are also keen on the Dutch centre-half but the Premier League leaders are prepared to outbid their title rivals.
Van Dijk scored three goals in 34 Premier League appearances in the 2015-16 season in his first full campaign in the English top flight.
Chelsea have the best defence in the Premier League after conceding just 13 times in 20 outings in the 2016-17 campaign so far.
The west London side signed Brazil international David Luiz in a £32m deal from Ligue 1 outfit Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
