Paul Merson states blunt prediction for Chelsea v Arsenal
The former Arsenal midfielders has played down the chances of Arsene Wenger's side springing an upset against Chelsea in the title race
Paul Merson has poured cold water on talk of Arsenal springing a surprise against Chelsea and throwing the Premier League title race wide open next weekend.
The Gunners will make the short trip to Stamford Bridge next weekend after the north London side host Watford in their next Premier League game at The Emirates on Tuesday night.
Antonio Conte’s men, meanwhile, will make the long journey to bitter rivals Liverpool as Arsenal hope Jurgen Klopp and his struggling team can do them a favour in the title race.
Arsenal were 3-0 winners against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season before Conte switched to a 3-4-3 formation and the Blues won their next 13 Premier League games.
Speaking to Sky Sports about Arsenal’s clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next weekend, Merson played down the chances of the Gunners upsetting the Premier League leaders.
“It’s a big week for Chelsea, I think if they won their next two games I don’t know how anybody can catch them,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Big two games but this game, Arsenal, do you fancy Arsenal to beat Chelsea? I wouldn’t in my opinion.
“Chelsea are playing phenomenally well, very tight at the back and Arsenal’s form when they do play the bigger teams they haven’t produced yet.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season and 10 points behind eventual champions Leicester City.
