Mark Lawrenson states prediction for Chelsea v Brentford
The former Liverpool defender is backing Chelsea to attempt the double this season
Mark Lawrenson is tipping Chelsea to ease to a straightforward win against Brentford in the FA Cup fourth round at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues have returned to form in the Premier League after scoring five times and keeping back-to-back clean sheets in victories over Leicester City and Hull City following a 2-0 loss at Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.
Chelsea were 4-1 winners against Championship side Peterborough United in the previous round despite captain John Terry earning a second-half red card.
The west London side have the opportunity to complete the Premier League and the FA Cup double in Antonio Conte’s first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson backed Conte’s side to beat Brentford and go deep into the competition in pursuit of silverware in the 2016-17 season.
“Another local derby – it is less than six miles from Griffin Park to Stamford Bridge – but one that has not happened too often down the years,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“The two teams have only played twice since 1950 – and both those matches came in the FA Cup in 2013, when Chelsea were given a scare before winning the replay.
“I don’t see the Blues having the same problems this time and it would not surprise me if they had a good run in the cup to go with their title challenge.”
Chelsea are sitting at the top of the Premier League table and eight points clear of their closest rivals Arsenal in the title race.
Brentford, on the other hand, are in 15th place in the Championship standings.
