Danny Welbeck: What helped me overcome Arsenal setback
The Arsenal striker offers some insight into how he overcame his latest knee problem
Danny Welbeck says his previous experience of overcoming a serious knee injury helped the Arsenal striker overcome his most-recent setback.
The Gunners star made his first start in all competitions for Arsenal since last season when Welbeck was handed a place in Arsene Wenger’s starting XI following his recovery from a serious knee problem.
Welbeck repaid his manager’s faith with a quick-fire double in the first half at St Mary’s in Arsenal’s 5-0 win against Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday evening.
The Arsenal striker was replaced in the second half by Alexis Sanchez as Wenger looked to protect his striker following his injury-hit start to his Gunners career.
Speaking to Arsenal’s website after his return to first-team action at Southampton, Welbeck gave an insight into his coping mechanism during a tough lay-off.
“I think because I had this experience before, coming back from an injury, I kind of knew what to expect even though it’s a tough time,” said Welbeck.
Arsenal signed Welbeck in a £16m deal from Manchester United in the 2015 summer transfer window.
The Gunners are in second place in the Premier League table.
