Ex-Chelsea coach poses question about Michy Batshuayi

Ray Wilkins is not sure whether Michy Batshuayi has what it takes to succeed at Chelsea

Ray Wilkins has questioned whether Michy Batshuayi has the necessary mental strength to adapt to life in the Premier League.

The striker signed for Chelsea in the summer transfer window from Marseille as one of Antonio Conte’s first recruits at Stamford Bridge, but has struggled to break into the first team.

Indeed, Batshuayi has not started a single game for Chelsea in the Premier League so far this season as he has struggled to oust first-choice striker Diego Costa.

The Belgian striker scored for the Blues as he played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 4-1 FA Cup third round win over Peterborough at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

It remains to be seen whether the 23-year-old will be able to hold down a regular spot in the Chelsea team for the rest of the season.

However, Wilkins has questioned whether the forward has what it takes to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League at Chelsea.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ on Monday morning, Wilkins said: “When you come into big clubs it’s not only about your footballing ability, it’s how you handle the mental capacity.

“When you’re at a big club and you have to win, sometimes players can’t take the mental side of it on board and they really struggle.
