Ex-defender reacts to Anthony Martial’s display in Man United’s 4-0 win over Wigan
Arsenal legend Martin Keown singles out Anthony Martial for praise after Manchester United's win
Martin Keown singled out Anthony Martial for special praise after the Manchester United striker helped Jose Mourinho’s side ease to a 4-0 win against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.
The France international was omitted from Mourinho’s squad for their 1-1 draw with Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium last weekend after the Manchester United manager criticised the forward’s uninspiring performances.
Mourinho laid down the gauntlet to Martial ahead of the visit of Wigan in the fourth round of the FA Cup as the Red Devils boss confirmed the France star would retain his place if he impressed against the Latics.
And Martial teed up Chris Smalling with a superb run and cross for Manchester United’s second goal against Warren Joyce’s side.
Speaking to BBC Sport after Manchester United booked their place in the FA Cup fifth round, former Arsenal defender Keown singled out Martial for praise.
“When Martial cuts in onto his right foot he is so dangerous. He picks out Smalling and there is only one winner,” Keown said.
“It was another cross into the box and Wigan can’t deal with it.
“It was a great finish.”
Martial moved to Manchester United in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 side Monaco in 2015.
