The Red Devils striker opened the scoring in the seventh minute at Old Trafford as he set Manchester United on their way towards victory against the Championship side in the third-round clash.

Anthony Martial then doubled the home side’s lead in the 15th minute at Old Trafford with a cool finish into the bottom-right corner to put Jose Mourinho’s men in control.

Marcus Rashford scored twice in the second half to add gloss to the scoreline and cement Manchester United’s place in the fourth round.

The victory marked Rooney’s return to the starting line-up after his lengthy absence from the line-up with an injury.

And Lineker used his personal Twitter account to have his say on Rooney’s display and comment on Manchester United’s performance against the Championship side.

Lineker tweeted:

Manchester United will now turn their attention to EFL Cup affairs ahead of the semi-final first-leg clash against Hull City on Tuesday night at Old Trafford.
