Gary Neville: I was worried about Chelsea but Antonio Conte’s side deserve credit
The former Manchester United defender unveils his concerns for Chelsea ahead of their 3-0 win at Leicester
Gary Neville has revealed that he was worried about Chelsea ahead of their 3-0 win against defending champions Leicester City on Saturday evening.
The west London side were without Diego Costa for the trip to the King Power Stadium after Conte revealed that the Chelsea striker had a back injury amid reports of a bust-up between the manager and his star player.
Marcos Alonso scored either side of half-time to put Chelsea into a 2-0 lead before his compatriot Pedro Rodriguez sealed three points with a brilliant team goal.
Chelsea moved eight points clear of their closest rivals Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur after the Premier League weekend ahead of their home clash against Hull City next weekend.
Speaking on the Gary Neville podcast as Sunday evening after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United, the Red Devils legend praised Chelsea for their resilient performance at Leicester.
“I actually feared for Chelsea a little bit. I wondered how it would impact them. Fair dues to them. It was a game where you could switched off after half an hour knowing they were going to win. It felt like they were in control and they were solid,” Neville said.
“It was a really good performance from Chelsea. It was needed. If they lost on Saturday night, Antonio Conte would have had big questions to answer in terms of losing last week and what’s happening with Costa. Other teams would have got closer to them.”
Chelsea have won 14 of their last 15 games in the Premier League.
The west London side will host struggling Hull City in their next top-flight game.
