Gary Neville: This was a big moment for Man United and Jose Mourinho

The Manchester United legend believes beating Tottenham Hotspur could prove the turning point in the Red Devils's season

Gary Neville believes beating Tottenham Hotspur could prove to be the turning point in their first Premier League campaign under Jose Mourinho.

The Red Devils won their opening three top-flight games under the Portuguese coach before a 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the derby in September prompted a run of difficult results for the 20-time English champions.

Manchester United won two of 11 Premier League games before the visit of Tottenham in December triggered a drastic reversal in their form under new manager Mourinho.

Summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored a first-half winner to seal a 1-0 win against Spurs at Old Trafford to help the hosts gain some ground on their title rivals.

Manchester United won their next five Premier League games to leave England’s most-successful club two points adrift of fourth-placed Arsenal in the race to secure a place in next season’s Champions League competition.

Neville has singled out their close-fought win against Tottenham as key moment in his former club’s season.

“The win against Tottenham was a big moment. They saw that win out. If they had conceded in the last five minutes against Tottenham, it would have been slightly different maybe,” Neville told Sky Sports.

Manchester United will host Liverpool on Sunday 15 January.
