Graeme Souness opens up about Granit Xhaka at Arsenal

Graeme Souness delivers his verdict on what he has seen from Granit Xhaka at Arsenal so far this season

Graeme Souness has admitted that he cannot understand why Granit Xhaka has failed to control himself on the pitch after he was sent off for the second time this season for Arsenal.

The Swiss midfielder was given his marching orders midway through the second half of Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Burnley on Sunday after he lost possession and slid in two-footed on Steven Defour.

It marks the second time that Xhaka has been sent off for Arsenal this season and was his ninth red card in less than three years for the midfielder.

And former Liverpool star Souness has given his verdict on Xhaka’s temperament this season following his switch to Arsenal from Borussia Mochengladbach last summer.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Sunday’s game, Souness said: “What isn’t registering with him? He’s obviously got the exploding head.

“I don’t look at him and think, ‘you’re an aggressive player’. It’s a lapse in concentration and he’ll be annoyed he gave the ball away so cheaply.

“For me, he doesn’t run around making aggressive challenges. He is the run of mill midfield player for me. He must have something in him where it goes.”

Xhaka is likely to miss four games due to suspension, including Arsenal’s crunch Premier League clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 4 February.

Arsenal are currently second in the table and eight points behind leaders Chelsea.
