Graeme Souness: This Liverpool defender was the best player at Old Trafford
The former Liverpool captain singles out Dejan Lovren for special praise
Graeme Souness has named Dejan Lovren as the best player in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
The Croatia international started at centre-half alongside Ragnar Klavan as Liverpool were pitted against a Manchester United side that had won their previous nine games in all competitions.
And Lovren was impressive as he managed to keep Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan out in the first half of the bitter Premier League clash.
Ibramhimovic did manage to cancel out James Milner’s first-half spot-kick thanks to a header which beat Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet with six minutes remaining.
Speaking to Sky Sports after Liverpool’s 1-1 stalemate with Manchester United, ex-captain Neville was full of praise of Lovren.
“Klavan and Lovren was outstanding [on Sunday]. For me, he was the best player on the pitch,” Souness said.
Lovren moved to Liverpool in a £20m deal from Southampton in the 2014 summer transfer window under Jurgen Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers.
The Croatian defender endured a tough start to his Liverpool career but has made big improvements under current boss Klopp.
