Ian Wright: Arsene Wenger’s reluctance to play Arsenal striker is baffling
The Arsenal legend can't understand why Lucas Perez hasn't featured more regularly for Arsene Wenger's side
Ian Wright has expressed his bemusement at Arsene Wenger’s reluctance to play Arsenal striker Lucas Perez.
The uncapped Spanish forward started just his seventh game in all competitions on Saturday evening when Arsenal lined up against Preston North End in the FA Cup third round.
Perez moved to Arsenal in a £17m deal from La Liga side Deportivo La Coruna in the summer transfer window as the Gunners boss looked to bolster his attacking options at the north London club.
The 28-year-old scored a hat-trick on his first Champions League start as Perez helped Arsenal ease to a 4-1 victory over Swiss outfit Basel in their final group-stage fixture in December.
Perez opened his Premier League account on Tuesday night after the Arsenal striker volleyed past Artur Boruc in the second half of their 3-3 draw with Bournemouth in the Premier League.
The summer signing failed to get on the score sheet in Arsenal’s 2-1 win against Preston but Gunners legend Wright believes Perez should be given more of a chance in the starting line-up.
“It has been quite baffling. He came in and Arsenal needed someone to come in and score goals, there are games where you expect him to play but he doesn’t get on the pitch,” Wright told BT Sport on Saturday.
“It’s really strange. We paid £17m for him.”
