Insider predicts when reported Man United target will leave Atletico
Antoine Griezmann is unlikely to leave Atletico Madrid before the end of the 2017-18 season, according to Sid Lowe
Antoine Griezmann is unlikely to leave Atletico Madrid before the end of the 2017-18 La Liga season, according to Spanish football expert Sid Lowe.
Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for the France international ahead of the 2017 summer transfer window as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his squad following a mixed opening eight months in charge.
Earlier this month, The Sun reported that Manchester United were ready to offer Griezmann the same wage as Paul Pogba – £220,000 a week – in an attempt to secure the French forward’s signature.
The 25-year-old has scored eight times and has made four assists in 18 appearances in the 2016-17 La Liga campaign so far.
Griezmann has established himself as one of Europe’s leading strikers during his two-and-a-half year stay at the Vicente Calderon.
Speaking to Irish Times’s Second Captains podcast, La Liga expert and Guardian reporter Lowe tipped Griezmann to remain at the club until 2017-18 season, although he conceded that a transfer could happen sooner.
“He has said that his future is Atletico and is tied to Diego Simeone,” Lowe said.
“My inclination that he in an ideal world would stay another season at Atletico with a new stadium and Diego Simeone and then at the end of next season, I suspect they’d both go. I’m certainly not ruling out him going sooner.”
