The Liverpool legend delivers verdict on Joel Matip

Jamie Carragher has hailed the return of Joel Matip to the Liverpool side after the centre-half started his first game since December on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp named his summer signing in his Liverpool starting line-up for their 1-0 loss to to Southampton in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.

Matip hasn’t featured for the Reds since a 2-2 draw with West Ham United at Anfield at the start of December.

The retired Cameroon international has since recovered from a muscle injury and has been granted permission to represent Liverpool after confusion about his status after refusing a call-up to his national team’s Africa Cup of Nations squad.

Speaking to Sky Sports about Matip’s return to the Liverpool side on Wednesday night, Carragher delivered a glowing verdict on the African centre-half:

“It’s a massive boost. He looks a top player. It’s still early days in his Liverpool career,” Carragher said.

Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table and 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea with 16 games to play.
