Jamie Carragher: I really wanted Jurgen Klopp to make this Liverpool signing
Jamie Carragher revealed that he was desperate for Liverpool to sign a left-back in the summer transfer window
Jamie Carragher has revealed that he really wanted Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to sign a top-class left-back in the summer transfer window.
The German coach led the Merseyside outfit to a eighth-place finish last season after Klopp took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers back in October 2015.
Liverpool signed seven players in the summer transfer window as Klopp looked to put his stamp on the Reds and transform the squad into title contenders.
The 49-year-old failed to sign a left-back – though – despite Alberto Moreno’s erratic performances throughout the 2015-16 Premier League season.
And Carragher has revealed that he was exasperated when Klopp spent £30m on Sadio Mane but opted against sign a left-back and instead using James Milner at full-back.
“It was said Sadio Mane was too expensive, at £30million, when he left Southampton,” Carragher told The Daily Mail.
“He’s currently the leading scorer and his fee has never been mentioned. Every Liverpool fan — myself included — screamed for Klopp to buy a left back last summer. What did he do? He put James Milner there and got immediate results.”
Liverpool will host Sunderland in their next Premier League game at the Stadium of Light on Monday 2 January.
The Reds are looking to win the Premier League title for the first time in their history after finishing in second place in 2009 and 2014.
