Jamie Carragher issues Liverpool transfer warning about midfielder
The Liverpool legend discusses Philippe Coutinho's future at the Anfield outfit after he signed new long-term deal
Jamie Carragher has warned Liverpool that they could still lose Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona or Real Madrid despite the midfielder signing a new long-term deal.
The Brazil international signed a new five-and-a-half year contract with the Merseyside outfit on Wednesday morning to end speculation about his future at Anfield.
Coutinho has previously been linked with La Liga giants Barcelona after his former Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez completed the switch to the Catalan side in a £65m deal in 2014.
The South American has flourished under Jurgen Klopp’s management since the former Borussia Dortmund coach took over the reins at Anfield from Brendan Rodgers back in October 2015.
However, ex-Liverpool defender Carragher warned that Coutinho still move to one of La Liga’s powerhouses if Barcelona or Real Madrid match the Merseyside club’s valuation and the player fancies a move to Spain.
“Liverpool are no different to any other club in world football bar two,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“If Barcelona and Real Madrid come for one of your players and pay you what you want, they’re going because 99 per cent of players want to play for those two clubs. If that happens, he has been unbelievable for Liverpool and we’d have to thank him like we did with Luis Suarez.”
Coutinho moved to Liverpool in an £8.5m deal from Inter Milan in the 2013 January transfer window.
The Reds are in fourth place in the Premier League table.
