Jamie Carragher: Jurgen Klopp rates this Liverpool player very highly
The Liverpool legend reveals that Jurgen Klopp has high hopes for Joe Gomez
Jamie Carragher has revealed that Jurgen Klopp has high hopes for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.
The England Under-21 international is still waiting to make his first competitive appearance under the Liverpool manager following Klopp’s appointment as Brendan Rodgers’s successor back in October 2015.
The former Charlton Athletic defender suffered a serious ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during international duty a matter of days after Klopp took over the reins from Rodgers.
Gomez started Liverpool’s opening five games of the 2015-16 season before his serious knee injury curtailed his season and the versatile defender hasn’t featured for the Reds.
Klopp has been playing Liverpool vice-captain James Milner in a left-back role this season following Alberto Moreno’s poor performance at Arsenal in their opening Premier League game of the 2016-17 campaign.
Gomez, though, will provide Klopp with another alternative in the problem position after he initially impressed in the Liverpool first-team under the German’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers.
The club’s former defender Carragher claimed that Klopp is a huge admirer of Gomez as the Liverpool boss looks to improve his defence.
“Joel Matip has impressed me since he arrived on a free from Schalke but he’s had fitness issues, as has Dejan Lovren,” Carragher told The Daily Mail.
“I know Klopp holds Joe Gomez, an England Under 21 international who is working his way back to fitness, in high regard but I still think he needs a defender.”
