Jamie Carragher makes blunt admission about Liverpool in title race
The Liverpool legend says Jurgen Klopp only has the sixth best squad in the title race
Jamie Carragher has claimed that Liverpool have the sixth-best squad in the Premier League title race.
The Reds crashed out of the EFL Cup at the semi-final stage on Wednesday night after Shane Long scored a 90th-minute winner to seal a 1-0 win at Anfield and help Southampton progress 2-0 on aggregate over two legs.
Liverpool have only managed to win one of their seven games in 2017 so far after an unconvincing 1-0 win against League Two side Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup third-round replay at Home Park earlier this month.
The Merseyside outfit have slipped down in the table in recent weeks and Jurgen Klopp’s side are now in fourth place in the table and 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea with 16 games to play.
Liverpool are now facing a must-win game against Antonio Conte’s side at Anfield in the Premier League next Tuesday.
Speaking to Sky Sports after Liverpool’s 1-0 loss to Southampton, Carragher delivered is verdict on Klopp’s squad.
“I just look at it now and all season it’s been about Liverpool maybe going for the title – but that squad, you’d never think it would be good enough to win the league,” Klopp said.
“The reason you may have hope is no Europe and also I think Liverpool have got a top manager.
“Out of the top six, Liverpool’s is probably the sixth best squad or the sixth best team. But they are where they are because of the manager and no Europe.
“Now, with them running out of the legs, that energy, we’re maybe seeing what this Liverpool squad is. And when we’re talking about squad, you look at that bench and it’s nowhere near big enough or strong enough.”
