Jamie Carragher makes bold claim about Philippe Coutinho and Liverpool

The former Liverpool defender believes Philippe Coutinho is the only player capable of getting into the 2009 and 2014 sides

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Philippe Coutinho would be the only member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad capable of getting into Liverpool’s best sides of the Premier League era.

The former England defender finished as a Premier League runner-up twice during his decorated career at the Merseyside outfit before he opted to hang up his boots after the final game of the 2012-13 season.

Liverpool finished in second place under Rafael Benitez in 2008-09 after Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres fired the Merseyside outfit to the cusp of glory before eventually finishing four points behind Manchester United.

Brendan Rodgers masterminded Liverpool’s incredible title challenge in the second half of the 2013-14 season after a 12-game winning run before the Reds lost 2-0 to Chelsea in their penultimate home game of the campaign to leave their title bid in tatters.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, Carragher claimed that only Coutinho would be able to secure a place in either of those Liverpool sides.

“I’ve been trying to work out how many of Jurgen Klopp’s first choice would get into a combined side of the last two that pursued Anfield’s holy grail and the only one I could see being a definite is Philippe Coutinho, to play from the left,” Carragher said.
