Jamie Carragher reacts to defender’s display in Liverpool’s 1-0 loss to Southampton
Jamie Carragher singles out Trent Alexander Arnold for praise
Jamie Carragher singled out Trent Alexander Arnold for praise in an otherwise disappointing Liverpool performance in a 1-0 loss to Southampton in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.
The 18-year-old started at right-back in the absence of England international Nathaniel Clyne through injury as Liverpool looked to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg at St Mary’s.
And Alexander Arnold was Liverpool’s best attacking player in an otherwise disappointing first-half performance from the home side.
The teenager completed 26 of his 29 passes to help put the Southampton defence under some pressure in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final.
The English youngster struggled to keep Nathan Redmond under wraps with a lack of defensive cover on the right wing.
Speaking to Sky Sports at half-time, Carragher singled out Alexander Arnold for praise after his tireless performance.
“He is the only one who is giving any penetration. He is the only player on there who has the pace to hurt them. He is the only one making runs in behind,” Carragher said.
“It’s so obvious again how much Liverpool miss Mane. He’s had to cover the whole right side.”
Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table and 10 points adrift of current leaders Chelsea.
The Reds will host Antonio Conte’s side in their next top-flight game at Anfield on Tuesday.
