Jamie Carragher reveals his one worry about Liverpool defender
The Liverpool legend is already worried about Joel Matip's injury record
Jamie Carragher has admitted that Joel Matip’s injury record is a concern after the Liverpool defender’s return to first-team this week.
The retired Cameroon international was given clearance by Fifa to represent Liverpool last week after Matip snubbed a call-up to the Cameroon squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Matip missed the start of the season with an injury problem before he made his Premier League debut in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in August.
The 25-year-old hasn’t started a Premier League game since the start of December when Liverpool played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with West Ham United at Anfield.
Matip moved to Liverpool in a free transfer from Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in the summer transfer window.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Southampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, Carragher explained what concerns him about the African centre-half.
“The one worry is how many injuries he’s had,” Carragher said.
“As a manager, you want to trust your centre-halves on the pitch and you want to know they are there for you. A big worry is the injuries you’ve got. You hope he doesn’t become an injury prone player over the next year or two.”
Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table.
