Jamie Carragher: This Arsenal signing a big upgrade on Per Mertesacker
The Liverpool legend has been impressed with the performances of Arsenal summer signing Shkodran Mustafi
Jamie Carragher has hailed Arsenal summer signing Shkodran Mustafi as a huge upgrade on club captain Per Mertesacker.
The Germany international completed a £35m move to Arsenal from La Liga side Valencia in the summer transfer window as Arsene Wenger looked to bolster his centre-half options at The Emirates.
Mustafi hasn’t lost a Premier League game since being drafted into the Arsenal side but the former Everton defender has missed their last four games due to injury.
Arsenal lost back-to-back games to Everton and Manchester City in their absence before a 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion and a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the Gunners’s comfortable victory over the Eagles, Carragher suggested that Arsenal could have avoided defeats at Everton and Manchester if Mustafi was playing in their back four.
“I don’t think Mustafi has lost a game since he’s been involved. He’s a big upgrade on Per Mertesacker,” Carragher said.
“You think about those big games away from home, where they were let down at Goodison and The Etihad – Mustafi looks like he could be the big, commanding centre-back we’ve been calling for for years at Arsenal – and he could have made a difference in those games.”
Arsenal’s 2-0 win against Palace on New Year’s Day left the Gunners in fourth place in the Premier League table and nine points behind leaders Chelsea.
