Jamie Carragher: What I find worrying about Liverpool
The Liverpool legend highlights the difference between Jurgen Klopp's substitutes and the Southampton bench
Jamie Carragher has bemoaned Liverpool’s lack of options on the bench after Southampton substitute Shane Long knocked Jurgen Klopp’s side out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
The Reds were looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg at St Mary’s after Nathan Redmond scored the opening goal of the semi-final clash to give the Saints a slight advantage.
Klopp started with a full-strength side at Anfield on Wednesday night as Liverpool looked to reach a 14th League Cup final following their loss to Manchester City on penalties at Wembley las term.
However, even the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge struggled to make the breakthrough against Southampton before Claude Peul brought on Long from the bench.
The Republic of Ireland international scored a winner on the stroke of full-time to seal a 1-0 win on the night and book Southampton’s place in the final.
And Carragher used Long’s impact to highlight the difference in strength between the Liverpool and Southampton benches.
“I’m a fan of Shane Long. He is always the type of player when he comes on that you think will cause problems with his pace,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“I saw him coming on as a substitute and you think that’s better then what Liverpool have on the bench in terms of a forward coming on to cause damage. Liverpool don’t seem to have that luxury at the moment.”
